Van Williams, TV's Green Hornet, dead at 82

To be honest I wasn't sure where to put this, so I decided to go here. So to those of a certain age or those who loved the reruns, like I do, Batman 1966 was the first I think comic book TV show to do a crossover even before the word was uttered.

It was done with The Green Hornet, produced by the same team that gave the world the ultra-campy Adam West/Burt Ward vehicle. This show however was more like "Arrow" than the more upbeat "Supergirl" or "The Flash."

Van Williams, who played the Hornet for one season, despite it being solid TV, died at age 82.

For those who do not know of the Hornet...

It was the story rich playboy editor/publisher Britt Reid, who inherited The Daily Sentinel newspaper from his father, who died in jail after being framed for a crime he did not commit. To combat crime, and perhaps put the police on notice, Reid donned a mask, fedora and long coat to battle the bad guys as the Hornet, complete with his gas gun, seal to mark his being there, valet Kato and the Black Beauty car. To the underworld and law enforcement he was public enemy #1. But to fans, he was a hero. The Hornet began on radio in the late 30's and was produced by George W. Trendle, who also helmed Sergeant Preston of the Yukon and The Lone Ranger. These three shows all originated in Detroit, MI at WXYZ Radio (now WXYT).

The radio show ended in 1954. But 12 years later William Dozier, who brought the camp classic Batman to TV decided to bring the Hornet to TV, with something a bit grttier and edgier than the POW! ZAP! and KAYO! of Batman. Williams played Reid and the Hornet and the man who played Kato would become a martial arts legend loved moreso in death than life...Bruce Lee.

The Green Hornet's theme song on radio an in two 1930's movie serials for Universal was Flight of the Bumblebee. For the TV show horn player Al Hirt gave the show a mod late 60's makeover.

DIG THAT GROOVY SOUND, MAN!
