Anne Hathaway could soon be fighting a monster horde. Hathaway is attached to star in and produce The Shower, a female-centric sci-fi action comedy that made last years Blacklist, the annual listing of best not-yet made screenplays in Hollywood. Producing with Hathaway are her husband Adam Shulman as well as Andrew Lauren, the son of Ralph Lauren, and D.J. Gugenheim. Lauren is the head of Andrew Lauren Productions with Gugenheim, the companys production president. Jac Schaeffer, who wrote Shower, will also produce. The project is described as being tonally in the vein of the Seth Rogen apocalypse comedy This is the End, cult hit Attack the Block and Kristen Wiig-Melissa McCarthys Bridesmaids. The story begins with a bright baby shower when the guests find themselves under darker skies: a meteor shower. These meteors, however, turn men into blood-hungry aliens and the women must fight to not only save themselves but also the world. The project is in the packaging phase, with the plan to get a director and actors before taking it to financiers or studios. "Jac has written an awesome sci-fi comedy centered around funny, fully dimensional female characters," said Hathaway. "I feel so lucky to be a part of the team that will bring her enormously talented and fresh voice to the big screen." "Anne is the perfect actor to anchor a story that is ultimately about female friendship, with a lot of ass-kicking along the way," said Schaeffer. The development is a major move for Andrew Lauren Productions, which was a producer and financier on films such as Spectacular Now and The Squid and the Whale. The company is hoping to make a shift to a more active company that can also develop projects, tackle larger productions and be more involved in the production process; in April it hired Gugenheim as president of production to lead the transition with the aim to produce three films a year. While the material does seem outside the Hathaway wheelhouse the Oscar winner next stars in the Nancy Meyers workplace comedy The Intern with Robert De Niro and when she does genre material it tends to be the elevated kind, such as The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar the actress has shown a penchant for raising eyebrows with her choices. For example, the actress is developing Colossal, a Japanese-style monster movie from Voltage Pictures that has been described as Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich. Schaeffer wrote and directed her debut film, TiMER, which premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. Hathaway is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Sloane Offer. Schaeffer is repped by Verve and Writ Large. |
