Most people make resolutions, and many never keep them. Does anyone still do it? I rarely do, but i've a good track record of sticking to them when I do.

Paul Verhoeven's Elle

Elle is the latest film from legendary Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Robocop, Blackbook) and I watched it based on the strength of his reputation, not knowing what it was about. It's about a woman, Michelle Leblanc (Isabelle Huppert) who is raped and has to deal with the consequences of it.

This is a great movie, where Verhoeven lives up to his reputation as a subversive director who forces the viewer to confront his own hypocrisies and moral failings. There's a lot of critique of "rape culture" in this movie, of a lot of tropes we've seen in the media just in the past few years, this is a very well thought out film.

The most obvious one is that Michelle is not the "ideal victim". Her life has been difficult and she has been let down by three generations of people. Among those older, both her parents let her down, she has a difficult relationship with both, and her father is a famous murderer, with the police having immortalized her as the crazy daughter due to one decontextualized photo. Her own genration has let her down, she had to break up with her ex boyfriend because he hit her. Her son has let her down, she feels he is not amounting to anything much at all, she doesn't like his girlfriend either.

She copes, I think, by trying to be the psychopath the media portray her as, but it doesn't work. She actually does care about people. She buys pepper spray for self defense ... but she also learns how to treat its injuries. She cheats with her friend's husband, but she hates it more and more as time goes on. Her attempted coping may make her look like "a *****" to some, but it's a shield and a mask. It does come to at a cost later on, when she feels she cannot go to police.

Video games also play a role. She works for a video game manufacturer, an industry which has been the sight of controversy in the past few years due to portrayals of violence against women. This is very explicit in the movie, in a gratuitous way that you can't miss it. The movie doesn't moralize on the point at all, it just makes it clear and unambiguous how video game design is an accelerant to rape culture.

I didn't know what this movie would be about, and I didn't feel like seeing another rape-related movie after watching Room, Confirmation, and Braveheart on the plane a few weeks ago. However this was very well done, it was about the Michelle's journey, how she deals with what happens to her in the context of her own life and personhood.

So, how would the inclusion of one of the original Avengers characters as a guest star in one episode (or more) change the narrative of the first season? The second?

Iron Man
Hulk
Thor
Captain America
Hawkeye
Black Widow

Out of the original six, Black Widow has the most history in comics with Daredevil. So far it doesn't look as if Matt has ever encountered Natasha yet. Maybe if the Russian Mob (or someone with a connection to her "Red Room" past) starts asserting itself in Hell's Kitchen, she might show up.

If Banner were ever put on trial for his Hulk rampages, it would be interesting to see Matt as his attorney; maybe this would be a good way to bring in Jennifer Walters as well.

Outside of Stark's charity interests donating a grant to a local organization or person, I don't see him hanging out in the Hell's Kitchen area at all.

This Hawkeye is married with a family who live in a rural area, so it's unclear how Clint might show up.

Unless Thor decides on a whim to go on a bar crawl in the area, it's not likely he'd show up locally.

Before the events of Civil War, I could see Steve Rogers deciding to visit more of NYC just for the general experience of seeing more of the modern world. So far in the MCU he hasn't had a "street world" adventure, though.. I suppose Matt may have been passed along some stories from his dad about the legend of Capt. America.. (though I'm thinking Matt's father was born well after WWII, based on this timeline)..

I am starting this thread to try to bring some organization into the fold. In the years ahead there are going to be marches, protests, and petitions to safeguard our country as well as aim to maintain and progress civil rights.

This is the place to post information about important marches, protests, and petitions so that everyone can hopefully have up to date information on how and when to get involved.

The next big march is the WOMEN'S SOLIDARITY MARCH on January 21st.

The 2016 Review & New Year's Thread

With the events of the past year being a mixture of tragedy (The Zika virus in Florida, the numerous amounts of celebrity deaths, and the growing ISIS threat), and the truly unexpected (Leicester winning the Premier League, Britain leaving the EU, and Donald Trump being elected president), I’m wondering what has been your personal achievements, & favourites this year, and what are you currently looking forward to in the New Year?

1) Re-igniting my passion for horticulture, photography, and Pool/Blackball, as well as taking up snooker
2) Passing both my Maths & English exams

4) Volunteering for the Tall Ships event

List of deleted/changed scenes?

I'm curious now as to what we saw or know that was changed in the final version. Can some of you who followed this from day one list scenes that they know were changed? I have a feeling the trailers also featured a lot of cut scenes but since I only watched the first two trailers, I don't know what else was changed. I avoided everything else from there on our. I figured let's compile a list with screenshots (when available), clips and details to such changes. If I missed an existing thread, please feel free to delete this. I did not find it when using the search option.

Questions about 01x08 Hostile Takeover

I've got 2 questions about Hostile Takeover. In Season 2, it's revealed that Superman and Jonn do not get on, because of Kryptonite. However, in Hostile Takeover, Jonn says that Kryptonians are impervious to his telepathy which Superman finds hilarious. That doesn't make sense. If they don't get on, why would Superman find this fact hilarious.

Also a question about Superman. In Human For A Day I think it was, which is 01x07, when Hank Henshaw comes to take Kara and recruits Jeremiah to the DEO, he says that Superman refuses to work with them, yet in Season 2, Jonn said they didn't get on because Jonn found Kryptonite just after he took over the DEO, when Superman would work with them. So for that to make sense, it would have to be that Superman wouldn't work with them while Henshaw was at the helm (because of Cadmus according to James), yet started working with them when Jonn took over (somehow he knew Jonn was not actually the real Hank Henshaw) and then stopped after Operation Emerald.

Back onto Hostile Takeover, at the end, when Non and Supergirl are facing each other, he calls her the last daughter of the great House of El, however, wouldn't Astra be considered part of the House of El?

These are not the only inconsistencies that I've found, and it makes me think that the show seriously needs more competent writers that have a memory of what they have written so the story makes sense.

What movies forever shaped your childhood for the worst? I know I'm not the only one that was traumatized by Old Yeller. ;)

What brought me to create this thread was being reminded of Scruffy. which has to be one of the most depressing cartoons I had ever seen. It might as well be called "Scruffy and the terrible, horrible, no good very bad life" The sad part is when I tried to talk it out with my friends at school, none of them had ever heard of it. :funny:

Batman v Predator

Batman peered over Gotham City and watched the moonlit sky cover a landscape seething with a new brand of criminality - gang warfare. The Red Hood Gang had declared a territorial war against the Black Mask Gang. Scarecrow and Ra's al Ghul had allied themselves to the Red Hood, while Harley Quinn, Two-Face, and the Riddler had allied themselves to the Black Mask. It was pure urban anarchy out there.

On board the alien spacecraft flown by the terrifying non-Earth intelligent hunter-creature known as X-225 Predator, a signal was received from the alien's home planet ordering the 'sentinel' to land on Earth and 'investigate' the Red Hood-Black Mask urban gang war. X-225 Predator (or simply 'Predator') loaded his laser-guns and dart-belt and landed his spacecraft right outside Gotham City (quietly) in a forest.

Batman devised a scheme to create internal conflicts within the Red Hood Gang and Black Mask Gang. He would try to convince Ra's al Ghul and Harley Quinn to betray their two gangs and instead work with each other to challenge Batman at the Gotham Ice Skating Rink. Ra's and Harley took up the challenge, fearing they would never again obtain the opportunity to challenge Batman in a public venue such as the ice-rink. Red Hood and Black Mask became mad with rage, thinking that the two gangs themselves conned each other to obtain an ally.

After Batman locked up Ra's and Harley at Arkham, he returned to the Gotham crime beat only to find a scene of pure horror. Predator had engaged members of both the Red Hood Gang and the Black Mask Gang in an alley-fight and was ripping up goons on both sides, left-and-right. Batman swooped in and used his powerful rope-gun to tie up Predator's legs and then tranquilized him with sleeping-darts before chasing away the other Red Hood and Black Mask goons lingering in the alley.

BATMAN: Why are you 'visiting' Earth?
PREDATOR: Gotham is plagued by anarchy.
BATMAN: Throwing fuel to the fire, eh?
PREDATOR: Yes!
BATMAN: I order you to return to your planet.
PREDATOR: Gotham is too much...fun.
BATMAN: I could blind you right now!
PREDATOR: Alright, sweet prince, I surrender.
BATMAN: I always felt funny being a vigilante...until now!
PREDATOR: The eternal optimist!
BATMAN: Return to your planet.
PREDATOR: I'll leave, but we'll see if Gotham becomes...sane.
BATMAN: There's a chance if you're not here making a hellmouth.

So in the long history of comic book movies, there have been some truly iconic portrayals of beloved comic characters. But for every great adaptation, there's the downside, the great characters who either never met the potential we as fans know they have or were just plain horribly adapted to the point of no longer being the character we know and love? Which characters do you think got the shortest end of the stick in their film adaptations?

Could Batman be an 'arbiter' more than a 'vigilante'?

Batman has to deal with villains who are basically criminally insane (e.g., Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, etc.).

However, some Bat-villains consider themselves to be 'revolutionaries' or even 'philosophers' (i.e., Ra's al Ghul, Two-Face) and appreciate the label of 'vigilante.'

So what if Batman deals with modern age urbanization-related criminality as more of a Judge Dredd type character or arbiter of the civics process? There is after all a decent Batman/Dredd crossover comic!

Imagine if Batman was negotiating with American movie actor and respected celebrity Michael Douglas about his role in the politically-conscious films The Star Chamber and Traffic (regarding the prosecution of Harley Quinn as a criminally insane nemesis of 'Gotham City').

In other words, there could be intriguing Batman/Dick Tracy crossovers, no?

Such conversations I think arise from the entertaining Batman/Judge Dredd crossover.

Hi, I just saw Hairspray Live and I absolutely loved it! What do you want to see next?

I didn't put anything like Hamilton on the poll because let's be honest, they won't be making that into a live show or movie for a few years at least.

Personally I would love to see them do Wicked. It's popular enough but it looks like there's nothing happening on the movie front at the moment so this is probably the best way to see it for people who can't get to a theatre district. Also it's probably more suitable for stage than a movie IMO

How should comics reflect an increasing xenophobic world?

I have a thread in the SUPERMAN forum as well for overall. But this here is for MARVEL, DC, and etc. How should comics respond to an increasing xenophobic world?

Personally I'd love for them to tackle it head on. William Stryker should achieve political prominence if not become a President if possible. Fear of sentinels should be on the rise. The mutant registry should pop back up should reflect talks of Muslim registry. The Red Skull should be more powerful and scarier than in recent past with the re emergence of the alt-reich. The Inhumans, how it was handled on Agents of Shield recently in these topical regards, would be another great way into it.

In DC go through Superman and Supergirl dealing with a more powerful Lex Luthor, as well as reflecting it through Martian Manhunter.

These are unfortunately very scary and real concerns right now that comics are easily set up to tackle head on, thus I'd love to see it focus on it increasingly more. I can say as a first generation hispanic immigrant, my world has become sadly a lot more dangerous than it was prior to this campaign and election. I've felt personally more threatened than ever and that's a real fear I'd love to see comics handle, take on, and provide hope for in a very dark tunnel.

The recent DC films as well as Supergirl have tackled this subject as well, obviously X-Men. What recent comics or arcs would you say in comics have handled this since 2015?

How would you like to see xenophobia handled and reflected in comics? I would absolutely LOVE to see Alan Moore tackle it in some fashion with an original work, similar to Watchmen and V for Vendetta. That too would be awesome. I just, as said, see a lot that can be done here.

With the American Way being hijacked in real life by Lex Luthor like it was in DC Comics prior how will DC respond?

Like Trump, Lex similarly preaches about "dangerous" aliens who come out of the sky and has gone to extreme lengths of falsehoods and deception to paint these aliens as a legitimate threat. I can say that as an alien, a hispanic first generation immigrant, my world has become a lot more dangerous in these years ahead. As an immigrant, I have always looked up to Superman - he is the iconic immigrant superhero. Thus, I would love to see DC reflect this sad state of rising xenophobia and remind people that "hey, we come in peace." :yay:

How do you think DC Comics should respond through Superman to this scary new world we're unfortunately living in? How will DC and Superman face an ever increasing xenophobic world and the politicians seeking to further it? Or maybe they've started to focus more on it already?

The NFR preserves movies in the library of congress. The film has to be 10 years old to be put into the NFR, as well as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Unless you count Zorro, there are, to my knowledge, currently no Superhero movies in NFR. In your opinion, which 10+ year old superhero films belong in the NFR? Which movies should be in the NFR once they turn ten years old?

MCU Sinister Six - Kingpin?

In the 90s Spiderman cartoon, there was a Sinister 6 that was referred to as the insidious 6. for whatever reason. and by the end of it, we learn that it was the kingpin that was behind it all.

If we're even still going to have a sinister 6, it'd be pointless to have it NOT in the mcu. Like, how would spiderman be a part of it then.

Because I know the biggest problem of all is kingpin not being spiderman related in the mcu because he's a tv character. if this sinister 6 thing is gonna even happen, it'll probably be after a spiderman trilogy.

so it's maybe a decade away, and by then i think it'd be easier to get kingpin and daredevil together.

whatever will happen with daredevil and kingpin could have happened by then. which would also make it easier by then i think also, to have daredevil and spiderman together

First Time Watching Arrow (Go Easy on Spoilers)

Hey all,

First off, I'm new here and hope to stay for a while. The reason I signed up though was because I was looking for a place to talk about Arrow, which because of the invasion Crossover, I decided to finally start and now I'm in mid-season 2. I saw this forum and it pretty much has everything superhero (And Star Wars but not Star Trek?) and as a fan of Supergirl and Flash, this forum jumped out.

Anyway, like I said I'm in mid season 2 (Watched the episode about the Clock King last night) and I'm really loving the series so far. Season 1 was great, but Season 2 has really upped the ante with the League of Assassins, the return of Sara, and Slade finally reuniting with Oliver.

In terms of my first question in this thread, what is up with Laurel and Oliver in the one scene where Oliver told her off? Doesn't Laurel have a point that her sister did kinda ruin the family by going on that boat and Oliver through this whole relationship drama has been really inconsistent. I know Laurel is going through depression and alcoholism (Which has gotten better as a storyline as the season has gone on) but why does she have to apologize when she's kinda right about the whole thing.

The thing I really like about this series so far is basically the characters other than Laurel, especially Team Arrow (Felicity and Diggle and Roy has gotten better). I know the last place I went to talk about the series the fans aren't keen on the Olicity thing, but I really liked that last scene between the two of them. Right now, I'm really liking that working relationship even though I know it might go deeper, which I'm somewhat dreading.

- marriage equality comes to Australia
- tesla cars roll out and work out perfectly
- the Wonder Woman movie makes a billion dollars
- a reboot of Ecco the Dolphin is announced

And for me personally...
- my boyfriend moves in with me and it all goes well :woot:

It’s no secret filmmaker Wes Anderson is working on a stop-motion animated movie about dogs, not unlike the one he made with “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Some of the cast has already been announced: Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Bob Balaban and Bryan Cranston. Today, in a video announcement, Anderson revealed the title of the film, “Isle Of Dogs,” and the rest of the cast including Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton and Greta Gerwig. The voice cast also includes F, Murray Abraham, Harvey Keitel, Frances McDormand, Live Schreiber and Yoko Ono alongside Japanese actors Kunichi Nomura, Akira Ito, Akira Takayama and Koyu Rankin. Anderson once called the movie a “Japanese story” so presumably the isle in the movie is set somewhere in Japan and this explains the new group of actors joining Anderson’s troupe.

Resurrecting dead actors via CGI?

I'm little surprised that there doesn't seem to be a thread about this yet.

We've seen digitally de-aged faces in Ant-Man and Civil War, and one of the movies opening in December has a character with the likeness of an actor long ago deceased. What do you think about this? Does it raise ethical problems? Could we see new movies that star for example Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe or Robin Williams?

His hiring is probably the most exciting thing about this movie for me. After Solaris, Drive, Contagion and The Knick I can't wait to see what he'll bring to a comic book movie.

I'm a little disappointed Marco Beltrami won't be able to further develop what he started in The Wolverine, but it's nice to get some new blood in the genre.

Poll: Joker vs. Lex Luthor: Who Is Off to a Worse Start?

The Joker and Lex Luthor are easily DC's most popular and recognizable supervillains, and for good reason. Their evil schemes have proven to be tall orders for DC's most iconic superheroes, Batman and Superman. And at least in the case of the Joker, we have seen an actor's portrayal (Ledger's) that was so electrifying that it took the character to new heights.

So this year, we were introduced to the DCEU versions of these two characters. While both BvS and Suicide Squad have their staunch supporters, even many people who enjoyed the films said they were not fans of the way the Joker and Lex were portrayed. Indeed, if there was one thing about each film that most fans and critics agreed on, it's that these two portrayals were... not great.

So I ask you, who was worse? It's been said that "DC has the best villains" and yet, its two BEST villains have already been royally butchered onscreen. So much so that many fans have said that they'd rather never see either of them again. What do you think? Which portrayal did more damage? Was either one so bad that you hope WB just avoids the character altogether in the future instead of trying to right the ship? Or are you one of the ones who enjoyed these performances and would like to see more?

One Blu-Ray disc isn't working on my PS3.

I put the disc in the machine, the machine spends a minute trying to load it and, suddenly, makes the eject sound. There's no disc ejected from the machine, and the Blu-Ray doesn't play.

I try again, and again and it still won't start. I did try it in another machine, and it did work on my PS4, and even stranger is moving it back to the PS3 the film did start working. I ejected it, put it back in - it won't work anymore.

Since then I have tried six films. All six films are working, just fine. In fact, in the set the film that isn't working is from, the other two films work just fine as well.

Does anyone has the slightest idea what could be wrong? Is it my PS3? The disc? Because I've wiped the disc down and it still isn't working.

I have had the problem with other discs before, but they usually start working after ejecting or restarting the console. After that, they work just fine. But this film does not want to start at all, and the issue with other films is extremely rare.

It's a shame because it's Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I had hoped to give it a watch. But it just doesn't seem to want to work at all. On top of the six I've tried today, too, I tried about four others yesterday when I noticed the problem and they all worked fine without a single hitch.

Villains for the sequel

Who do you think should be the villain of a Suicide Squad sequel?

This movie really needs a more down to Earth film, more black ops stuff rather then the Suicide Squad fighting a god like character.

The Suicide Squad should be fighting terrorists or criminals, there are a ton of terrorist and criminal groups in DC. Do something more gritty and realistic, with lower, but more personal stakes, rather then another climax with a powerful, boring villain who fires a blue beam in the sky.
