After putting into motion a female-centric Ghostbusters, Sony Pictures is looking at gender-bending another one of its budding franchises, 21 Jump Street. Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, writers who are working on Comedy Centrals buzzy Broad City, have been hired to write a female-driven Jump Street spinoff. The move is aimed to broaden the franchise base for the franchise-light studio that is seeking ways to create its own cinematic universes. Ghostbusters is on the forefront of the expansion, with not only a female-centric version that shoots this summer under the direction of Paul Feig and stars Melissa McCarthy among others, but a whole universe is being planned. Men In Black is also getting a broadening of its definition with a cross-over being developed with 21 Jump Street for a feature to star Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. The two Jump Street movies have grossed over $530 million for Sony. Aniello and Downs are repped by UTA and 3 Arts Entertainment. |
