Sony Pictures' ongoing Spider-Man revamp continues. First, the studio pushed back The Amazing Spider-Man 3 from 2016 to 2018, and now, after Drew Goddard's Sinister Six opens in 2016, Sony plans to release another spinoff, this time featuring one of Spidey's female counterparts, in 2017.

Which female counterpart, you ask? Well, we don't know quite yet. However, we do know that Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) is scripting the project, with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing.

Character-wise, there are several likely candidates: Silver Sable, Stunner, Firestar, (some version of) Spider-Woman and Black Cat. Of course, the alter ego of that last one, Felicia Hardy, was played by Felicity Jones in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which makes her an obvious choice to star.

Honestly, it was only a matter of time before someone announced a female-driven superhero movie, and it just happened to be Sony that beat everyone to the punch. Then again, the news -- first reported by Deadline -- comes shortly after Marvel Comics announced a gender swap for Thor. That's not to mention Warner Bros. unveiling the first images of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in 2016's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. So really, this was a long time coming.

In other Spider-Man news, Deadline notes that the Venom movie -- now rumored to be titled Venom Carnage -- is still in development, with Alex Kurtzman and Ed Solomon penning the script. That film, which has Kurtzman attached to direct, could also come out in 2017.

So, who do you think Sony's female Spidey hero could be? Give us your best guess in the comments below!
