Many shows over the years have jumped the proverbial shark. Hell, shows have been jumping the shark since long before Fonzie gave birth to the phraze. So, I'm wondering when you feel certain shows have jumped the shark? They could be older programs which have come to an end, or even current shows that are on the brink of cancelation.
Don't worry about if the moment is a "true" jumping the shark moment. This is all about opinion. Here are some of mine:
Xena: Warrior Princess
When Xena is made pregnant through immaculate conception. I could tell right away that they were planning on eliminating anything to do with Greek mythology and making the entire show about Christian mythology, which just ruined the series for me. There were Christian centric episodes throughout the series, like when Autolycus helped Xena steal The Ark Of The Covenant from an evil warlord, or the David & Goliath episode. But when they decided on complete genocide of everything Greek, they ruined the show. And it all started with Xena becoming pregnant by The One God.
Nikki
Season 2, Episode 1. Absolutely everything in that episode was a "jump the shark moment". Its like The producers actually wanted the show to fail. Dwight's overbearing mother went home, so we no longer had the conflict between her and Nikki. The show might've survived that, but they also had The Golden Calf shut down for health code violations, so Nikki, Mary, and the rest of The Golden Calf Dancers are all unemployed. One of those or the other might have been an interesting twist to the series, but then they also had Jupiter sell his wrestling promotion to a major multimillion dollar promoter (obviously a parody of Vince McMahon and the WWE), leaving Dwight unemployed as well. Then the obnoxious uber - Christian neighbors who hate Dwight and Nikki become their new landlords and evict them making them homeless as well. The show went from funny and entertaining to sad and depressing. Not a good thing for a sitcom.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
I don't know if this series ever truly jumped the shark, as there were several excellent episodes throughout the series. But if I had to pick a JTS moment, I'd say it's the Season 5 finale, when Buffy sacrifices herself in order to save the world. The following two seasons weren't quite as good as the five leading up to them, but they certainly weren't bad seasons. They just didn't have as many great episodes.
Anyway, those are my picks. What are some of yours?
